A Very Merry Keithmas

We couldn’t gear up for the holidays without a trip down memory lane. As a family company, Perfect Bar has been built on a foundation that dates back more than 30 years, and with that comes three decades of holidays spent together. Between Mom, Dad, 13 siblings and whole lot of holiday cheer, there was never a dull moment in the Keith household.

Don’t take our word for it, though, the older Keith kids are here to share their fondest holiday memories as we kick off their favorite season:

"One of my favorite holiday memories is when we were expecting more than 40 guests on Thanksgiving (yes... 40), so Mom and Dad thought 40 homemade pies were necessary - just in case each person wanted an entire pie to themselves or take home with their leftovers. So, with her little sous chefs in tow, Mom set out to make 20 apple pies and 20 pumpkin pies. Sounds like a nice gesture, sure. Nice until about three hours in, when we had pie crust up to our elbows, honey dripping from the counter tops, apple slices flowing out of the sink, and a flour-laden floor! We persevered, but when we ran out of room to store the pies in the kitchen, we started stashing them in the laundry room, living room, dinning room, etc. Mom was such a good sport and served up those pies like any Keith woman would have done (after a few good laughs and a lot of clean up). About two weeks later she was doing laundry and, while reaching to get some stain remover from the top shelf, she found her hands on two apple pies that had been stored (very) safely there. I've never seen her laugh so hard in my life. Definitely one for the books." - Charisse Keith

"Our Dad would always aim to transform our house into a Winter Wonderland for Christmas. One year, he thought the best way to do that was to bring all the toys that were meant to be outside, inside, simply for the 'wow' factor. The older kids (a.k.a. the elves) were in charge of cleaning up the toys to look brand new - plastic kitchens, wagons, bikes and even big outdoor swing sets. We'd lug them into the house and set them up with decorations and presents, so when the younger kids got up in the morning they'd feel like it was a Christmas Miracle. Mind you, we couldn't actually swing on any of these swings because they would bump right into our beds and walls, but the visual effect was something I'll never forget." - Bill Keith

The holidays could never come soon enough for our family. Mom would make our matching holiday outfits, out of whatever fabric she deemed fitting for the season, and we'd sing our fair share of Christmas carols for family and friends. It was quite the spectacle, if you ask me. As kids, Christmas was about the presents, but as adults it was the togetherness and time spent working as a team to bring the king-size Christmas vision our Mom and Dad had to life. With that in mind, we laugh about the one year the Mr. and Mrs. had so many little ones running around and not enough "older kids" to help out with elf-wrapping duties quite yet, all of our presents were displayed throughout the living room like a mini Toys-R-Us. Come to think of it, that's a pretty logical way to do it. Nice job, Mom and Dad.

"Christmas was our favorite time of year - even while on the road when Dad was giving health talks around the country and we were along for the ride. Holidays with all of us kids in a motorhome was a sight to be seen. At Christmas, we had to store all the wrapping paper and gifts for the family in the back, taking turns wrapping as to maintain the element of surprise for the gift recipients. All in all, our gift-wrapping sessions would last at least six hours, but we were happy to do it, knowing the big unveil was right around the corner. Once the wrapping was done, we ended up sharing our bunks and dressers with our gifts until Christmas morning was upon us. If Mom and Dad thought we were a handful, I can only imagine how they felt with a motorhome full of kids, wrapped gifts and the incessant sound of 'Is it Christmas yet?' Never a dull moment around the holidays." - Monise Keith

Wishing a Very Merry Keithmas from our family to yours.

About me

Call it passion, or maybe curiosity -- whatever it is Jessica is fueled by, it's not slowing down any time soon. From the get-go, she knew that her desire to represent brands with a purposeful story was a strong one, and after graduating with a degree in public relations from SDSU, followed by a solid stint at a lifestyle PR agency, she landed in a role with a company whose story outshines the rest (hint hint, that's here). She's openly obsessed with the outdoors, reveling in cycling races, hiking adventures and, most commonly, brunching on patios. She is known for always taking the "scenic route" -- especially for fish taco pit-stops along the way -- and makes a solid effort to keep her schedule jam-packed with activities and friends, which keeps her on her toes.

  1. We love your family stories! Thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas to the whole clan! It’s just perfect; )

  2. what a tribute to your Dad,my cousin Bud.No doubt he is so proud of all of you.His passion for a healthy body, both inside and out,was obvious from a young age for him.I think the move to California had alot to do with it too. I am enjoying getting to see all his children and had it not been for facebook, most likely would not have happened.I knew Athena,Zena,Vike, when they were alot younger and a few years ago had the opportunity to meet up with Athena in Indiana.Keep up the good work,Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you.

    FAMILIES ARE FOR EVER

    1. Robyn,
I worked for Bud as a manager at several Jack LaLanne Nutrition locations in the early 70’s and last spoke with Bud in the early 80’s after I had moved back to Texas. He and I became good friends when I worked for him and I spent time with him & his family when I lived in southern California. Your mention of his children — Athena, Zena and Vike is the first I’ve ever seen anywhere; I remember he also had a son younger than Vike named Kai who was born around 1972 or so. I lost track of Bud and read of his death in 2009. I always wondered what happened to him during the years since I last spoke to him. I now live in Carrollton, TX (Dallas suburb) and can be reached at smoothie51@verizon.net or holtkort@verizon.net .
