6 Tricks to Help You Stick to New Year’s Resolutions

Struggling to keep up with your New Year’s resolutions? Don’t fret, you’re not the only one. According to research from the University of Scranton, only 8% of people successfully achieve their resolutions. But with the right mindset and a realistic approach, it’s possible to beat the odds and accomplish those New Year’s resolutions. Here are a few tricks to help stick to those goals this year. They may seem simple, but we all need a little reminder sometimes to jumpstart our motivation and get these done effectively.

1. Be specific

Instead of vaguely deciding, “I will be healthier” or “I will save money,” try setting specific goals. For example, “I will workout 5 times a week” or “I will only go out to eat once a week.” Setting goals that are more precise and clear will make them easier to measure and attain.

2. Make time

With such busy schedules, it’s hard to find the time to do the things we want to do, let alone challenging resolutions. Be sure to set aside time each week to work toward your goals. Schedule a gym session in your calendar like you would a meeting.

3. Get a partner

Partnering up with a friend or family member with a similar goal can be a great way to keep motivated and stay in check. Or simply ask someone to hold you accountable for sticking to your goals. A strong support system can make all the difference. There’s also no shame in seeking professional help, such as a personal trainer or counselor.

4. Keep track

Keeping record of each week’s progress is a good way to make sure you’re keeping up with your resolutions. There are even apps that can help with this like MyFitnessPal, which monitors exercise and eating habits, and Mint, which helps with personal finances.

5. Visualize the end results

What you think, you become. If your goal is to run a marathon, just visualize yourself crossing the finish line and how great that feeling is going to be. A positive outlook can bring your goals to life.

6. Don’t give up

Don’t let one slip up bring you down. We’ve all had a moment of weakness, but instead of using it as an excuse to give up, use it as a motivator to try even harder. If something’s not working, it’s okay to reassess your resolutions and modify them so they are more attainable.

Don’t let your New Year’s resolutions slip away this year. Set some goals and stick with them!
