Advocating for sustainability in snacking is something we pride ourselves in. What started with a few moms around the kitchen table — all with the same sustainability mindset, too — has grown into a collaboration of many moms (and dads!) around the world to change up the way we snack. Their goal? To inspire kids and families to think about how daily choices affect their environment, their health and their future, and that’s when Lunchskins were born.
The mission began back when co-founders Kirsten Quigley and Cristina Bourelly were trying to come up with a gift basket for an auction at their children’s preschool bazaar. Once they decided on a sustainable lunch basket, they could not find one ubiquitous piece: a reusable sandwich bag. Ever since, the two have made it their goal to replace everyday plastic with smart, sustainable solutions that are easy to use and accessible to everyone. Pretty cool, right?
Quick fact: 50% of plastic is thrown away after just one use. Everyday, 20-million plastic sandwich bags (nearly 7.5 BILLION per year) and countless other single-use plastic items, many of which contain chemicals that can be absorbed by the food being housed in them, are dumped into oceans and landfills.
Since 2008, the women behind 3 Green Moms, the parent company to Lunchskins, have been helping families and communities think and act greener by replacing more than 1 billion plastic bags with their brand of reusable products – that’s a lot of sandwiches!
LunchSkins are made from a quick-drying fabric that is coated with a food-safe polyurethane liner. They’re grease-proof and moisture-proof, making them ideal for messy sandwiches and snacks. In their initial research, Quigley and Bourelly scoured materials from all over that would meet the high demand of a reusable sandwich bag – it had to be food-safe, dishwasher-friendly and moisture-proof to fit the bill. They eventually found pastry bag fabric that met all of those requirements, then upped the ante by designing fun, colorful prints for the bags. And the rest is history.
Since Lunchskins are designed with little ones in mind, they seal with Velcro, and the material keeps moisture at bay. Clean-up is a breeze: simply drape the bag over the tines of the top rack of the dishwasher and wash. (A word of caution, though: when making the switch from disposable plastic baggies, it might take some training for younger kids to remember to bring them home)
The best part about these bags is that they last for years! But, if you feel like refreshing your collection, that doesn’t mean the old ones get thrown out – they can be used to hold school supplies, spare change and other little knick-knacks around the house.
Lunchskins is also the winner of the Parent Tested Parent Approved award, getting a solid seal of approval for families.
We love the fun colors, different sizes and fact that each time we use one, we’re avoiding tossing another ounce of plastic into the trash. Leave it to moms to figure out a great solution that’s fun and functional!
