Organic Gemini

We know what you’re thinking – what the heck are Tigernuts and why are they in horchata? Tigernuts, actually, are not nuts at all. Rather, they’re small tubers: ancient root vegetables that comprised almost 80% of our Paleo ancestors’ diet, 2 million years ago. This superfood comes from Northern Africa and the Mediterranean; it’s high in fiber, iron, potassium and vitamins C & E, making it a superb superfood.

Organic Gemini has taken these tiny, tuberous roots and created a delicious collection of Horchata, with creamy, yet subtle flavors like coffee, strawberry and banana. Handmade in small batches in Brooklyn, NY, Organic Gemini’s Tigernut Horchata is vegan, organic, gluten-free and nut-free.

What is Horchata? 

Orxata de xufa (we’ll stick to Hor-cha-ta, thanks), the delicious milky beverage made from ground almonds, sesame seeds, rice, barley OR tigernuts (chufa nuts), better known as Horchata, varies in name and flavor from region to region. The sweet and addicting drink, which is served chilled or over ice, originated in Valencia, Spain and has become a favorite, natural summertime refreshment throughout Europe and South America, most recently making its presence known in the U.S.

 

 

The team behind this delectable drink has a pretty neat story to tell (and you know we love a good story), as to why they founded the company. After being diagnosed with ovarian cancer and given the news that she would both need surgery and likely not be able to have children, Mariam turned to her partner, George, to research alternative treatments.

After pursuing holistic treatments and beginning a diet restricted to food that was raw, organic, non-GMO, gluten-free and dairy-free, the ovarian cyst began to shrink, sans surgery, and a healthy body (and baby) was on its way. A year later, Miriam and George welcomed their first son, Lukas, and created their own brand, Organic Gemini, using one of the main ingredients Miriam discovered on her journey to health.
