DIY: Homemade All-natural Candles

A simple candle can change the entire ambiance of one’s home. Whether it’s a fresh or sweet scent, candles can make a room more inviting with the strike of a match. However, many candle lovers are unaware that Paraffin wax, which is used to make most candles, pollutes the air with cancerous toxins when heated. But not to worry, there is a natural alternative wax for candles that actually improves your health! Beeswax.

WHY BEESWAX?

When heated, beeswax emits negative ions that work to purify the air. By removing any contaminants out of the air, beeswax candles effectively reduce the symptoms of allergies or asthma. Its naturally-scented, honey-like aroma is also beneficial to those who are sensitive to otherwise harmful artificial fragrances. Ever notice how store-bought candles can get pretty pricey?  Well, worry not. If DIY is your thing, then save some bucks and have fun along the way by making your own candles.

MAKE YOUR OWN

This simple tutorial is perfect for beginners and seasoned vets alike. Follow along below and get the whole family working together to create all-natural candles for your home this fall.

What you’ll need*:

  • 1 lb beeswax
  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • (4) ½ pint mason jars
  • melting pot/double boiler
  • candy thermometer
  • natural wicks
  • pencil
  • scissors

*All supplies can be purchased on Amazon or found in local craft stores

Instructions:

  1. Prepare mason jars with wicks tied onto pencils, making sure the wick is in the center of the jar
  2. Turn on double boiler and add wax (chopped into chunks)
  3. Add coconut oil to melted wax
  4. Once wax and oil are completely liquefied, heat until 150-160 degrees
  5. Pour small amount of wax into jars to secure the wicks
  6. Once wicks are secured, pour remaining wax into jars leaving ½ in of space at top of jar
  7. Let candles sit overnight to cool completely
  8. Trim wick to ¼” length
  9. Decorate and enjoy!
